On mine, short press changes between trip A and B mileage, and on long press rest the selected mileage

 

The one in the center of the cluster does those things. This one, not so much.

 

It doesn't do anything on my 2018 2.5i

 

In for an answer mine alos appears to do nothing on my 2014 Xt. I was hoping it was for an ejector seat but no luck.

On mine, I press it in & hold for a second or two when I fill the tank with gas to zero out the trip meter.

 

Bingo! When you push this in it switches between trip A and Trip B in the center of the Speedo Tachometers. Holding it in resets whichever one is showing to zero.

 

It is probably another one of those right-drive/left drive items that are cheaper to add two rather than make a whole different piece.

Think about how the positioning of the selector would be if your steering wheel were on the other side of the car...

 

I think there's an older thread on this. If I remember correctly, it provided some functionality for at least the earlier 2.5i base model SJs, and wasn't needed in other trims.

If it's a "Mexico spec" car it's for Driving Information display

Owners manual section 3-35 to 3-37

 

It's for models that did not have MFD equipped, does nothing if you have MFD.

 

I have the multi-function display on my 2018 Limited and that "stem'" on the right side of the gauge cluster allows me to toggle between trip meters A and B or reset the trip meter with a long push. I do not have another stem in the center of the cluster that someone mentioned.

The stem on the right allows me to see the mileage on the odometer and the fuel tank status for a few seconds after pressing the stem if the car is turned off. This is handy if you need to know the mileage and or how full the tank is and you do not have the keys. I have a 2015 Forester limited trim.

 

I didn't know that and thanks for the tip. Just noticed it works on my 2018 too.

 

I keep a log of my mileage at each fill up. Before I start up to drive off, you can press it, and the center display with the odometer lights up. Then I jot down the mileage for future calculation. This works even without the key in the ignition.

 

Left stalk (the one used for trip meters) will light up the center display without key as well.
