As far as I can remember the starter isn't used at all. He matches RPMs and starts the engine by engaging a gear while moving. I've seen my dad do it a couple of times due to dead batteries but it was so long ago that I can't remember if there was something else to it, including using the starter as well.

Much of what he does sounds dangerous. Coasting with the engine off, cornering too fast to avoid slowing down.

He uses the Accord for a hellacious two-hour commute
That's what he need to fix, right there. Getting a job closer to home (or a home closer to work) would save a load more fuel than coasting and slipstreaming.

+1 i went from an 80 mile a day drive to work (round trip) to a 30 mile a day drive when i moved. my gas mileage suffers due to more stop and go, but i pretty much cut my gas usage in half. and that's without any fancy or dangerous tricks.

yup. this guy is nuts. I saw a show on hypermilers on TV, with this guy and I have to tell you, there is a serious level of insanity in his thinking. Some points I took away fron the show:

- he coasts when he can regardless of who is behind him
- in the summer he turns off the AC and rolls up the windows to reduce drag, after a 2 hour commute he looks like a pile of sweat - mmmm co-workers must LOVE him
- he "drifts" behind larger vehicles at an obescenely close distances
- he turns his car on and off depending on the how fast he assumes he can go at any given time

...and the worst was seeing him dip into a rest area to avoid traffic, turn off his car to coast and almost hit another car...and he had the balls to say the lady in the car should've been paying more attention. really!? turn on your car jackass!

In the end you really have to wonder what the hell he is trying to prove. If he's trying to tell the world that he is a do-gooder by saving gas but he really could care less about other people, then he definitely has made his point. CLEAR.
